Win Cool Daybreakers Stuff

To celebrate the release of Daybreakers this January 8th, retroCRUSH is giving a way 2 sets of cool collectibles pictures above. You’ll get a Daybreakers poster, steel “blood” bottle, and “Blood” energy potion (not real blood, but tastier). Plus you’ll get some sunglasses with the Daybreakers logo that you’ll never wear. How do you win? All you have to do is post a comment about what your favorite vampire movie is and why. I’ll pick my two favorite answers on Thursday. Good luck! The bottles are actually pretty nice, so don’t hold back!

Daybreakers looks like an interesting mix of The Matrix and Vampire movies. The art direction looks pretty good and the cast features Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, and Sam Neill. I’m not sure if they’re screening this for critics, but I’ll let you know what I think as soon as I check it out.

In the meantime, feel free to poke around the movie’s interactive sites. There’s Bromley’s Blood Bank which lets you open an account and feed off the blood of your Facebook friends, a Capture Humans site,  and the official movie site, to learn more.

My favorite vampire movie is Last Man on Earth, starring Vincent Price. What’s not to love here? It’s sourced from Richard Matheson’s I Am Legend, and inspired Romero to basically rip off the concept (Romero’s words, not mine) to make Night of the Living Dead. In fact, Last Man on Earth is a lot like Night of the Living Dead, only starring Vincent Price…oh and with vampires instead of zombies.

Vincent spends much of the movie tormented, drunk and listening to jazz records. The vampires attack his house nightly, and he hunts them down as they sleep by day.

The vampires in this are a bit strange, but they are in Matheson’s book as well. They aren’t supernatural but viral, and they wear cool spooky robes. Vincent bites it at the end, and it’s the more faithful to the book than the Heston or the Smith version.

I really enjoyed Let the Right One In but it does not displace the experience of watching Salem’s Lot on TV when I was 10. The TV Movie horrified me (the kid floating at the window really looked like my little brother to me) but I was compelled to watch part 2 the following Saturday. The kid in the window and the image of Geoffrey Lewis turning to the camera after he’s been vampire-ified haunt me to this very day.

near dark. i like it for bill paxton calling the bartender guy “pig knuckle” and the fact the vampires weren’t lame and mincing.

“Shadow of the Vampire” for two reasons. 1- it IS a good movie, and 2 – the only person creepier than Willem Dafoe was Max Schrek. Putting the two together is a whole new level of shit-your-pants creepy.

My favorite vampire movie is “Saturday the 14th” starring Jeffery Tambor as hard luck vampire “Waldemar”. This film is a corny combination of horror and humor albeit bad humor at times. Tambor showed hints of his comedic stylings that would later shine in the Arrested Development series where he played another type of vampire … a white collar criminal.

Why are we even having this conversation? “Vampires: Los Muertos” has Jon Bon Jovi as a vampire hunter. When do I get my prize?

I can’t go past Lost Boys. “Maggots Michael, you’re eating maggots.” Classic. Plus, one of the vampires is Bill S. Preston of Wild Stallion fame.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Shut up and let me finish. Kristy Swanson is hot, Donald Sutherland is awesome, and Paul Reubens is the best vampire ever. Well, at least he has the best death scene ever.

“Fright Night” from 1985 had the right mix of humor, horror, and minor nudity, as well as being stylish-Amanda Bearse watching herself in the mirror, dancing with apparently no one. “Salem’s Lot”, as mentioned above, was great for a TV movie. I heard it was originally intended to be a theatrical movie; it would be interesting to see how that would have turned out.

    Enjoy the site.

From Dusk til Dawn FTW! My favorite vampire flick.

Vampires who DO NOT fucking sparkle? Check.
    Strippers? Check.
Easy to incorporate drinking game? Check.
    Gratuitous violence and nudity? Check.

Doesn’t get much better than that.

The Addiction with Christopher Walken and Lili Taylor.
Not only is vampirism presented as something that can be resisted (a heavy handed attempt at a “vampire = junkie” message, I believe), but that it can be overcome. The idea of redemption through your own will and not the actions of others is something I find very refreshing.

“There’s a difference between jumping and being pushed. You reach a point where you are forced to face your own needs. And the fact that you can’t terminate your situation settles on you with full force.” – Kathy Conklin (Lili Taylor)

The presentation is stark without being too glamorous. A bit on the “heroin-chic” side of things. For every bit of beauty, there’s a lot of filth. Easily my favorite vampire film with Nadja following close behind.

On a completely childish note, The Addiction also features Christopher Walken saying the word “defecate” as seriously as he can. I can’t help but chuckle.
