Happy 200th Birthday, Frankenstein!

Wow! It’s hard to believe that Mary Shelley first published “Frankenstein: or The Modern Prometheus” 200 years ago! Even crazier is that it was originally printed anonymously with nearly 5 years passing before her name was put on it! One of the shitty critics of the time wrote of the book, “The writer of it is, we understand, a female; this is an aggravation of that which is the prevailing fault of the novel; but if our authoress can forget the gentleness of her sex, it is no reason why we should; and we shall therefore dismiss the novel without further comment”

There was even a stage version of the story performed in 1823, just a year after the first printing, that Shelley was able to see.

“Frankenstein” is probably one of the most influential works of fiction, and an early example of Sci-Fi with themes that persist to this day! If you’ve not read it before, and all you know of the work is the Unviersal films with Boris Karloff (which are truly fantastic) I recommend it highly!
